Conclusions of Special Review on Exploitation and Dissemination
T
he official conclusions on the Special Review have been positive. In general terms, reviewers acknowledge the great exploitation potential of WebSI results, coming mostly from the three suites of software enabling the construction of concept driven solutions for ASP. Some recommendations to improve dissemination and exploitation activities have been also provided. The Consortium will take into account the positive and valuable feedback provided by the reviewers and the officer for the last phase of the project.

Special Review on Exploitation and Dissemination
T
he consortium has been invited to participate to a special review on exploitation and dissemination activities to take place in Brussels on June 14-16 2004. This review will have a review panel of 5 experts on Grid Technologies (the Commission's Unit where the WebSI project has been re-allocated after the start of the FP6) with special background in market exploitation of R&D results. This special review, which will be made on 8 selected projects of the Grid Unit, is intended to the assessment of the FP5 Grid Projects.

Third Review Conclusions
T
he official conclusions on the 3rd project review have been very positive. The project was granted to continue without major changes.

Technical achievements have been acknowledged by reviewers. Productisation and commercialisation of the WebSi Toolkit is highlighted as the most important challenge ahead of the project. The Consortium will take into account the positive and valuable feedback provided by the reviewers and the officer for the next phase of the project.

Although two project reviews are planned until the end of the project, it's proposed to merge both of them into only one final review at the end of the project.

Third Review
The third review of the project was successfully held in Madrid on January 16th, 2004, at the Ibermatica’s premises. The review was focused on (i) Update on the three suites of components, including the new Data Integration Suite; (ii) first integrated prototype of the WebSI toolkit, showing the three suites working together; and (iii) early applications prototypes with a high degree of integration with the current versions of the WebSI components. During this review, several demonstrators were also presented, showing the advances in the diverse WebSI suites and its integrated use.

Joint demonstrator available
A joint demonstrator was prepared for the next project review comprising the last stable versions of the three suites of WebSI components. The demonstrator will be soon available on the Internet.

Project Meeting to launch Xyleme’s work in the project
A project meeting was held in Milan on June 30th and July 1st in order to facilitate Xyleme to join the daily project work activity and to organise the work to be implemented in the next months. The solution agreed in the Contingency Plan included the substitution of e-XMLmedia’s components for the Xyleme’s Zone Server and a new mediator developed by PRiSM (XLive), keeping the original Data Integration Suite architecture and its common API, XML/DBC. This decision should minimise the impacts of the new components in the overall WebSI architecture.

On the other hand integration task has started, involving the first versions of the components in the Composition and Presentation layers and the Xyleme’s Zone Server as brought in the project.

Second Review
The second review of the project was successfully held in Brussels on May 28th, 2003, at the CEC premises. The review was focused on (i) The Contingency Plan, where the new work plan was presented; (ii) applications design, (iii) WebML-based presentation layer and service composer update, and (iv) Active Documents based service composition update. During this review, the new partner, Xyleme, proposed to take over the roles of e-XMLmedia and Nextra in the project was also presented. Xyleme will be supported by two subcontractors: XQuark and PRiSM.

The project was granted to continue with minor changes in the Contingency Plan. The work plan has been revised accordingly, and the project duration will be extended in 5 months in order to allow partners to fulfil all the required project objectives.

The Consortium will take into account the positive and valuable feedback provided by the reviewers and the officer for the next phase of the project.

2nd Review notice
The Second Review of WebSI will take place in Brussels on May 28th, 2003. The Contingency Plan will be officially presented to the officer and the reviewers, and the work done in the second period will be evaluated

March 14th, 2003
Contingency Plan
The Consortium has contacted a French company able to substitute e-XMLmedia. This company is commercialising a native XML data warehouse that might be used as a basis to build the WebSI Data Integration Layer. This company is also running its own ASP business, so that they may also take over the role of Nextra in the project. There is not any need for a provider of ASP infrastructure in the project, but Nextra had other responsibilities in the project, like the integration of the diverse software suites in an ASP environment and the provision of guidelines on how to use the suites in the ASP business arena. Therefore, the Consortium understands this partner might well play the role of both e-XMLmedia and Nextra in the project.

March 1st, 2003
New Project Officer
Due to internal reassignments in the European Commission motivated by the 6th Framework Programme, Mr. Lemke, the former WebSI officer, has officially passed the project to Mr. Accordino. The transfer will be effective since March 1st, 2003.

e-XMLmedia's bankruptcy!
Unfortunately, one of the technical partners, e-XMLmedia, has just announced their bankruptcy. This unexpected event implies their immediate withdrawal from the project. Due to the role of e-Xmlmedia in WebSI, where they are in charge of the entire Data Integration Layer, which is besides built on top of e-XMLmedia's products, the Consortium has been required to provide a contingency plan, with specific actions in order to allow the project to continue guaranteeing the main original technical objectives.

Decisions on Nextra's withdrawal
The Consortium has decided not to look for a new partner to take over the role of Nextra in the project, since this is not actually necessary for the applications.

December 27th, 2002
First Review
The first review of the project was successfully held in Barcelona on December 17th, 2002, at the CIMNE premises (Centre Internacional de Mètodes Numèrics en Enginyeria - Polytechnic University of Catalonia). The review was focused on (i) applications requirements, (ii) system architecture, as well as specifications and general design of (iii) data integration layer, (iv) WebML-based service composer, (v) active documents based service composition, and (vi) design tool.

The project was granted to continue without major changes. The Consortium will take into account the positive and valuable feedback provided by the reviewers and the officer for the next phase of the project.

Nextra's withdrawal
On the other hand, one of the partners, Nextra, has announced their withdrawal from the project to be effective at the end of the first period. They in fact communicate the event just before the review, and the officer and the reviewers were informed during the event. The analysis of the applications requirements, as well as the means the end-users can provide made evident that the project did not require the provision of an ASP infrastructure for the applications. Consequently, the reviewers recommended not substituting the leaving partner with a new ASP provider if not actually necessary. This will be studied by the Consortium in the next weeks.
